Teeth Loss Replacements: Dentures

Patients can lose their teeth because of dental disease and tooth decay among other reasons. If you are suffering from teeth loss, you can opt for dentures, overdentures, or removable partial dentures. They are alternative replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. They are removable prosthesis made of metal or acrylic materials and are available in many designs, some which rely on clasping or bonding onto teeth or dental implants for retention and/or support. Properly fitting teeth replacements can reduce a host of problems caused by gaps left by the missing teeth.

Partial replacements

Removable partial replacements are prosthesis that are fitted if you are missing just a few of your natural teeth and the rest are scattered across the upper and lower jaw. Also known as “Removable partial dentures”, they consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored or pink plastic base connected by metal framework. They replace missing teeth attaching artificial teeth to the acrylic foundation over the missing teeth space. The partial solutions prevent other teeth from changing position. Most importantly, they assist with masticatory function, esthetics, and phonetics.

Complete replacements

If all your upper or lower teeth are missing, Premier Dental Team can offer multiple options including conventional complete replacements. This category of teeth restoration includes conventional, transitional, and immediate options. A traditional conventional denture is fabricated when patient have had at least twelve months of healing after your dentist has surgically removed all natural teeth. Generally, our patients come to see us seeking a new, well-fabricated set of conventional denture after having worn their original set for over eight to ten years. Alternatively, a transitional denture is fitted after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal and relax, which may take up to 12 weeks. The prostheses are not inserted until after your dentist surgically removes any remaining natural teeth. Usually, the teeth replacements are custom made for each patient’s mouth in a process that may take multiple visits. Once the transitional denture is made, you will have several trial fittings to ensure a proper fit. Patients wear this prosthesis in while they are transitioning into a conventional denture or an implant supported prosthesis based on the patients’ desires.

An immediate denture is made in advance and can be fitted as soon as your teeth are removed. That means you don’t have to go without teeth for long duration and you do not have to wait to smile again. The replacement requires more adjustments to fit properly because gums and bones shrink over time especially during the healing period. The teeth replacement improves appearance and comfort and can also aid in the healing process. Therefore, this solution may be considered temporary until a conventional replacement is made.
