What Causes Gum Recession? Gum recession can occur so gradually over time, that most people are not aware they have a problem until it is too late. Gum recession occurs when the gums start to pull away from the teeth and expose the roots, and it can be prevented if gum disease and other causative factors are identified early enough. Some causes of gingival recession include:

Causes of Gum Recession

  • Periodontal disease
  • Genetics
  • Tobacco use
  • Changes in hormones
  • Aggressive tooth brushing
  • Crooked teeth
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Clenching and grinding teeth
  • Oral piercings

What Does Gum Recession Look Like?

It is important to correct gingival recession because without the protective barrier of your gums, your tooth roots are exposed to outside stimuli that lead to decay and damage. You may have gum recession if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Uneven gum line
  • Teeth appear to be “longer”
  • “Black triangles” in between teeth
  • Tooth discoloration near the gum line
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Cavities at the gum line

Gum Grafting

We can restore gum volume with gum grafting. We provide several grafting methods, including:

  • Pedicle Graft – Extra gum tissue from nearby teeth can be pulled over the exposed tooth root.
  • Connective Tissue Graft – As the most common gum grafting procedure, gum tissue is taken from the palatal area (roof of the mouth) from beneath a flap created on the surface layer. The tissue sample is then sutured to the treatment site to increase the gum volume in the area of recession.
  • Free Gingival Gum Grafting – Similar to connective tissue grafting, this method sources tissue directly from the hard palate’s top surface layer. This option is ideal for patients whose gums are very thin.
